iPhone storage full? How to free up space
Updated October 31, 2026 · by David Ashworth
If you're seeing “iPhone Storage Full,” here's what actually frees space, in the order worth trying. Most of these are free and built into iOS.
1. See what's using space
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The bar at the top shows categories, and the list below is sorted by size. iOS often shows recommendations here too, such as reviewing large attachments.
2. Empty Recently Deleted
Photos you already deleted stay in Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted for 30 days and still use storage. If you are sure you don't need them, select them and delete them there. This is the step people most often miss.
3. Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage
If you use iCloud Photos, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Originals stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps smaller versions. You need enough iCloud storage for your library.
4. Clear message attachments
In iPhone Storage, tap Messages to review large attachments, videos and photos. You can also set Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages to 1 year or 30 days. That deletes older messages, so decide carefully.
5. Offload or delete apps
Turn on Offload Unused Apps in iPhone Storage, or tap any big app and choose Offload App (keeps its data) or Delete App.
6. Deal with big videos
Videos, especially 4K, are often the biggest items. In Photos, use the Media Types > Videos view to find them. Delete the ones you don't need, move important ones to a computer or another backup first, and consider recording at a lower resolution in Settings > Camera > Record Video.
7. Clear browser and streaming downloads
Downloaded shows, music and podcasts can take gigabytes. Remove downloads in those apps, and clear Safari data in Settings > Apps > Safari if needed.
8. Sort through your camera roll
Screenshots, duplicates, blurry shots and old memes add up. You can do this in the Photos app by selecting and deleting, or use a swipe app to make it faster.
One option: Best Photo Cleaner. It's our app, so weigh this accordingly. You swipe right to keep, left to queue a delete, up to share and down to file into an album, then review the delete list before anything is deleted. Video Compress makes a 720p version and moves the original to Recently Deleted. It has no server and no account. Free to download. Pay once: $26.99 lifetime. Or $19.99/year with a 3-day free trial, or $3.99/month. Like every app, deletes go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, so you'll still need step 2 to reclaim space right away. See how it compares to other apps.
Best Photo Cleaner is in App Store review. The App Store link goes live on approval.
Before you delete: back up
Make sure anything important is in iCloud Photos, on a computer, or in another backup before a big cleanup.
Questions
Why is my iPhone storage full?
Photos and videos are usually the largest category, followed by apps, messages with attachments and System Data. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what is using the most space on your iPhone.
Does deleting photos free space right away?
No. Deleted photos and videos go to Recently Deleted in the Photos app for 30 days and still use space. Open Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted and delete them there to reclaim the space sooner.
Will turning on Optimize iPhone Storage lose my photos?
No. With iCloud Photos on, Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud and smaller versions on the iPhone. It needs enough iCloud storage for your library.
What is Offload Unused Apps?
An iOS setting that removes apps you rarely use but keeps their documents and data. Reinstalling the app from the App Store restores it.
Do I need a cleaner app?
Not always. The built-in iOS tools in this guide solve many storage problems for free. A cleaner app helps when the problem is thousands of photos and videos you need to sort through.
